Classic Kunqu shows to be staged at Shanghai Grand Theater

FOLLOWING its successful tour in Beijing and Guangzhou, two plays of the classic "Four Dreams of Linchuan" - "The Peony Pavilion" and "The Tale of Handan" will be staged at the Shanghai Grand Theater on October 13 and 14.

The classic show presented by Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe made more than 1 million yuan (US$150,000) at the box office at Guangzhou Theater, a ticket-selling record of the theater's traditional opera performances.

"Four Dreams of Linchuan" is a representative work by ancient Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu (1550-1616) , who is regarded as the “Shakespeare of the Orient.”

"Four Dreams" include four well-known plays — “The Peony Pavilion,” “The Tale of Southern Bough,” “The Tale of Handan” and “The Purple Hairpin.” Each show has around 100 sets of exquisite costumes and stunning stage scenes.

Shanghai Grand Theater has also included the elements of Kunqu Opera into its public art education events. A lot of people in the city have been offered the distinctive charm of the 600-year-old Kunqu Opera through lectures and workshops.
