City heavily polluted with AQI topping 200

The smog shrouding the city for two days worsened today with the air quality index topping 200, hitting the heavily polluted level, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau forecast a respite from the smoggy condition, brought by a firm weather, this afternoon when the westerly winds transfer to easterly ones, which will carry fresh airs from the ocean.

The AQI was recorded at 200, the upper limit of a moderately polluted level, at 7am and soon exceeded it. By 9am, it reached 213, meaning heavily polluted.

According to the local weather bureau, since the easterly winds will linger in the city for several following days, the air quality is likely to improve during the remainder of this week.
