China still lags behind in colorectal cancer screening: experts

EARLY screening is the most effective measure to detect colorectal cancer and reduce its incidence and mortality. However, its screening lags behind in China with about 60 percent of patients diagnosed of the disease until after middle or terminal stage, medical experts said.

The five-year survival for colorectal cancer patients is only 31 percent in China, while it is 67 percent in the United States, whose incidence and mortality keep dropping by 3 percent annually since 2001 because of wide coverage of screening, experts said while releasing a scientific promotion book on colorectal cancer prevention and control launched by Team Curis Group and Pineapple Health Studio.

Due to the rise of elderly population and changing lifestyle, people with colorectal cancer have been rising in China and it has become No.5 most prevalent and deadly cancer. It is estimated that China will have 480,000 new patients every year from 2035.

“Early screening and early treatment are the key, especially among those with high risk,” said Dr Wang Jiejun from Shanghai Changzheng Hospital.

Concerning to people’s reluctance of receiving colonscopy and fecal occult blood, experts said blood test checking colorectal cancer indicators can be primary measure for screening and those being found with alarming results should receive further colonscope for final diagnosis.
