4 fake accident suspects arrested over blackmail
FOUR suspects have been detained and three more are being hunted for faking traffic accidents to take money from motorists in Putuo District, police said yesterday.
The incidents occurred at the crossroads of Taopu Road and Zhenbei Road, where drivers were confused at lanes leading to the on-ramp to the Middle Ring Road or the turn to Zhenbei Road and stopped to determine which way they should go.
From October, police received 10 reports from motorists who were pulled over in the non-motor lane and were then approached by “victims” who claimed their motorcycles had been hit by the car and demanded compensation.
One motorist who complained, a man surnamed Tang, told Shanghai Daily he was confronted early on January 4 by three motorcyclists who said he had knocked them down, demanding compensation.
Police said the scammers claimed to be seriously injured and threatened to report drivers to police for illegally using the non-motor lane.
They asked for 100-200 yuan (US$14.5-29)each time, from about five drivers a night. The official fine for using the wrong lane is 200 yuan and three demerit points. The con men often had accomplices who acted as witnesses, police said.
