300,000+ passengers take trains as Spring Festival exodus kicks off
THE city’s three railway stations are expected to see off 310,000 passengers today, the first day of the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush.
More than half of them, or about 170,000 passengers, will leave from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station; 90,000 from Shanghai Railway station, and 50,000 from Shanghai South Railway Station.
This is also the earliest Spring Festival travel rush over the last five years. The city has added 34 extra train services to meet the vast festival travel demand.
In a first, passengers will no longer have to wind their way to the dining car for food but can order on mobile application on some high-speed train services. The app ele.me will deliver food to passengers in their seats.
The app’s service currently covers 25 high-speed trains. It will be expanded to all high-speed trains in the future.
