104 museums open free Thursday to mark Museum Day

MORE than 100 local museums will open to the public free of charge on Thursday to mark International Museum Day.

The 104 museums taking part include popular attractions such as the Shanghai Auto Museum, Shanghai Museum of Glass and China Maritime Museum, an official with the Shanghai Cultural Heritage Administration said.

International Museum Day was established in 1977. This year’s theme is “Museums and Contested Histories."

Reservations are required at some of the museums and green channels will be opened for senior visitors on the day.

As well as the venues offering free admission, Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, the Natural History Museum, Shanghai Cinema Museum and the privately-owned Shanghai Guanfu Museum will offer half-price entry on the day.

To cope with the expected spike in visitors, 40 museums will stay open until 9pm on Thursday.
