Water price rise?
HANGZHOU may raise its water price to offset rising costs and encourage conservation, the city’s water authority said.
The price is now 1.85 yuan (30 US cents) per cubic meter of water and includes water purification and sewage treatment costs. The rate is the second lowest after Lhasa among 36 major cities.
Shanghai charges 3.45 yuan for the first 220 cubic meters a family uses in a year, 4.83 yuan for volume beyond 220 cubic meters and 5.83 yuan for volume beyond 300 cubic meters.
Ningbo charges 3.2 yuan for the first 204 cubic meters a year and 6.8 yuan for usage beyond 360 cubic meters. Beijing has the highest water prices, ranging from 5 yuan to 9 yuan per cubic meter.
A hearing on water prices will be held next month. The new price, estimated to be between 2.5 yuan and 3.5 yuan, is expected to take effect at the end of this year. Hangzhou last adjusted its water price in 2004.
