Oil paintings in national exhibition spotlight
THE National Exhibition of Fine Arts is turning the domestic art world’s attention to Hangzhou this fall. Held once every five years, the exhibition moves around the country to various cities and hands out 15 gold, silver and bronze awards to artists in all fields from painting to sculpture. Occurring simultaneously are other exhibitions, giving plenty of reasons to visit Hangzhou this autumn.
More than 1,200 oil paintings were submitted for the 12th edition of the national exhibition, but only 600 are on display in the halls and walls of Zhejiang Art Museum. It will be held through October 12.
Among the art on display, 90 will later be exhibited in Beijing.
“Traditionally the exhibition calls for works that pay attention to reality and modern society,” says Liu Dawei, president of the China Artists Association.
Most works comply with the desire for realistic works. Common subjects include city scenes, landscapes, ethnic minorities and soldiers.
Nine paintings on the right side of the first hall are worth special attention as they have been nominated for either gold or silver awards.
“Scene on a Bridge” by He Hongzhou is the only oil painting nominated for a gold award. It depicts Lin Fengmian, Wu Dayu and Lin Wenzheng standing on the bridge spanning the Seine River in Paris. The trio studied art in Europe in the 1920s. They all later became professors at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou and introduced Western art in China.
Xu Jiang, director of the China Academy of Art and one of the judges of the Oil Painting Exhibition of the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, says the trio had a profound impact on contemporary art in the country.
“Oil painting flourishes today in China because of them,” Xu says. “To my knowledge, many Chinese oil painters use over 10 kilograms of oil paint every year, and today companies selling oil paints and related products are prosperous.”
In addition, the China Academy of Art is holding “The Road of Oil Painting” exhibition to illustrate its evolution in the country.
“The history of the academy’s oil painting department is the epitome of the history of China’s oil painting,” says Yang Canjun, dean of the China Academy of Art’s oil painting department.
The exhibition does not arrange the artworks according to how oil painting was developed in the West, rather arranges them according to how it developed in China. The exhibit includes the works of Lin Fengmian and Wu Guanzhong, one of Lin’s students who combined oil painting with Chinese painting. It also features pieces by Zhao Wuji, one of the most famous Chinese abstract oil painters, and modern works.
Meanwhile, the Quan Shanshi Art Center, owned by artist Quan Shanshi, has three ongoing exhibitions. One showcases 100 artworks by Western masters including Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and A. A. Milnikov.
