High-speed railway

THE Hangzhou-Ningbo high-speed railway line will open to the public by the end of the year, the railway authority said.

Test runs on the 150-kilometer route is expected to start in August. It is designed to handle train speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour.

Once operational, the new line will cut trips from Hangzhou to Ningbo from about two hours to about 30 minutes.

The line will have seven stops.

Subway research

Research into the construction of Metro Line 6 will be launched this year, Zhu Dang, acting director of Xihu District, said in his government report.

The subway line from Zhijiang to Qianjiang Century City will stretch 25 kilometers, according to the plan.

In addition, the district will accelerate the initial public offering of Xixi Wetland Management Company, the construction of Xixi Sculpture Park and West Hill Tourism Area in 2012.

The district will begin construction of Guangming Temple Park, Fahua Hill Park and Banbi Hill Park in the district at the same time.

Travel rush ends

The 40-day Spring Festival travel rush ended on February 17. Hangzhou handled 30.28 million passengers by bus, train, air or boat, 107 percent more than the same period last year.

Buses were the most common way of transport with about 25.94 million people taking a coach for their trip. The city's bus operators increased capacity about 10 percent along major routes during peak periods.

More than 8,500 flights departed from Hangzhou during the 40-day rush.

The city's transport authority punished 322 vehicles for violating traffic regulations.

Zhejiang Province recorded 1,452 accidents during the period, a drop of 8.8 percent from a year earlier.

A total of 354,000 policemen carried out nine campaigns across Zhejiang during the travel season, punishing 390,000 people for speeding, 5,474 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 426 for drunk driving.

Danone withdraws

Groupe Danone SA, the maker of Danone yogurt, has suspended sales of its Bio brand yogurts in Hangzhou, a company manager confirmed this week.

"The withdrawal from Hangzhou is a step related to our overall strategy," a Danone Hangzhou manager surnamed Xu said.

Danone announced plans to stop production at its yogurt facility in Shanghai's Fengxian District on December 7.

The company's only remaining yogurt production facility in the country is in Beijing.

It can only supply key markets so the withdrawal is a natural result of that, said an industry insider.

PM2.5 data

Zhejiang Province will begin releasing PM2.5 pollution data daily on its website, www.zjepb.gov.cn, by the end of next month.

PM2.5 refers to particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less. The standard evaluates the number of PM2.5 particles in the air. These air pollutants are small enough to invade even the smallest airways of lungs.

These particles generally come from activities that burn fossil fuels. Vehicle emissions, smelting and metal processing are good examples of how these particulates enter the air.

The national PM2.5 standards are based on average air quality measurements both annually and on a 24-hour basis.

The annual standard for PM2.5 should be less than or equal to 35.0 μg/cubic meter, while the 24-hour standard for PM2.5 is less than or equal to 75 μg/cubic meter.

Zhejiang is the first province in the country that will release PM2.5 figures.

Currently, five cities - Hangzhou, Ningbo, Shaoxing, Jiaxing, and Huzhou - are listed as monitoring sites. Another six will be added by March 2013.

Thus far there are seven monitoring sites in Hangzhou while the province has more than 20 sties. Eventually, it is expected there will be at least 150 monitoring sites across Zhejiang.

However, the PM2.5 standard only counts as a reference about air quality.
