Bone marrow charity

A 23-year-old woman suffering from a rare, life-threatening blood disease is recovering after undergoing a bone marrow transplant at Zhejiang TCM Hospital, doctors said.

Wang Wenjuan from Quzhou, a city in Zhejiang Province, was diagnosed with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria last September. PNH is a rare disease marked by the destruction of red blood cells by the complement system, a part of the body’s intrinsic immune system.

Wang did not have the means to pay for the treatment, but after an appeal in the Hangzhou Daily, readers donated 400,000 yuan for her medical treatment within 25 hours. She was hospitalized on March 30 and received a marrow transplant on April 11.

“From chemical therapy to marrow transplantation, everything went smoothly. Her body showed no sign of rejection,” said doctor Ye Baodong, adding that Wang can leave the hospital in less than two months.

After bone marrow transplants, the recipient’s blood type typically changes to the donor’s blood type. Wang’s blood type changed from O to A.

“I’m grateful to the people of Hangzhou for their generous donations. After my recovery, I want to become a volunteer to help others,” she said.
