Foreign artists top theater list
A SERIES of original works co-produced by the theater and overseas artists will be the highlights as the Shanghai Grand Theater presents about 180 performances in its 2014-2015 season, which opened Wednesday.
Opera, symphony concerts and ballet will still dominate the schedule.
The original opera “Manon Lescaut” drew up the curtain of the new season on Wednesday and will also be presented tonight and on Sunday. It is co-produced by Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai Opera House and the Royal Opera House of Britain. It is the theater’s third time producing an opera after the well-received “La Boheme” in 2012 and “Attila” in 2013.
“Though we have always been promoting opera, symphony and ballet at the same time, less audiences have been developed for opera compared with that of the other two art forms. We are devoted to working on that part more effectively,” says Zhang Zhe, president of Shanghai Grand Theater.
Other original works for the coming season include “The Nutcracker” and “Jane Eyre” by the Shanghai Ballet and the Peking Opera “Jin Lu Qu” (“Bosom Friends”).
The theater will also continue to bring overseas classics to Shanghai, says Zhang.
Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Orchestre National de Lille, and Leipzig Philharmonic Orchestra will highlight the music section of the season. The Dutch National Ballet and the Nederlands dans Theater 1 will bring classic and modern ballet works to Shanghai.
“The audience may find their tears flowing out of every cell when they watch works by the Nederlands dans Theater 1,” says dance critic Ou Jianping.
