Suicide among the old rising fast

THE suicide rate among the elderly is increasing, bucking a national trend in China. The rate for people over 70 years old rose from 2002 to 2011, according to a report by Professor Jing Jun at the Sociology Department of Tsinghua University.

About 41.7 out of 100,000 old people in rural areas committed suicide annually by 2011, about four to five times the global average for that age group. About 33.8 out of 100,000 old people in cities killed themselves from 2002 to 2008, increasing rapidly from 13.39 out of 100,000 from 1991 to 1999.

A report released in the Journal of Clinical Psychological Medicine in 2005 suggested that about 59.2 percent of the suicides among people over 55 years old were related to diseases, while 34.5 percent involved financial problems.
