Pudong Shangri-La surpasses expectations

INITIALLY opening its River Wing in August 1998 as the first luxury hotel in the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone of the Pudong New Area, Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai, is certainly one of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts’ most iconic hotels on the Chinese mainland.

“Being at the heart of Lujiazui and prominently sited along the famous Huangpu River, the hotel is just a stone’s throw away from Shanghai’s landmark Oriental Pearl TV Tower,” Peter Clarke, general manager of Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai, told Shanghai Daily. “It enjoys convenient access to both of the city’s two airports and is also close to the subway station which connects Pudong to Puxi.”

“With all our guestrooms — 952 stylishly appointed rooms and suites in two distinctive towers — offering 365-day, panoramic views of the historic Bund, the famous Huangpu River as well as the rapidly changing skyline of Lujiazui, Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai, provides a second-to-none sense of place to visitors from around the world,” Clarke said. “You can well expect the city’s past, present and future magically unfold all at one time in front of your eyes.”

As the biggest hotel in Shanghai — 577 rooms at the classic River Wing and 375 rooms at the contemporary and exclusive Grand Tower — the riverfront property proudly boasts the largest hotel banquet and meeting venue in the city with a total of 8,000 square meters of versatile indoor and outdoor event space. The hotel contains two pillar-less ballrooms, the Grand Ballroom and China Hall, which can accommodate 1,500 and 1,700 guests respectively for cocktail receptions.

“We have the largest event space in a five-star luxury hotel, two main entrances at two towers, two front desks as well as dedicated group check-in areas, which jointly help to provide a luxury experience for our guests without making them actually feel the size of the hotel,” Clarke said. “We offer clients super flexibility on a tailor-made basis and are able to do outside catering for as many as 1,800 people.”

Providing meeting and event planners with an extensive and inspiring range of venues and packages for intimate banquets, corporate board meetings or international conventions, the hotel usually holds more than 1,000 large events every year.

For planners seeking venues for exclusive or high-powered meetings, modern and chic dinners or events for captains of industry and for those who appreciate the finer things in life, they will find The Summit Room their ideal option. The Victorian-styled Chairman’s and President’s rooms, meanwhile, could be perfect choices for exclusive dinners, entertainment or launches. An additional 10 meeting rooms of various sizes are also available for social or formal events.

Apart from great flexibility, a well-versed and loyal hotel team boasting years of event organization and execution expertise coupled with Shangri-La’s long established reputation in the field of catering and banqueting has built a strong track record for the hotel in addressing clients’ needs. This covers everything from the smallest of intimate social parties or mega events such as Western sit-down banquets for 1,800 people.

“We have history, longevity and knowledge within our staff,” said Clarke, a five-year veteran with Shangri-La group, referring to the more than 1,500 employees under his leadership. “Nearly 50 percent of our employees have been here for more than five years and many of those are going into more than 10 years. It’s a great asset to the hotel.”

Creating benchmarks in Pudong as well as Shanghai’s overall hotel culinary scene are Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai’s 11 cutting-edge designer restaurants, bars and lounges, where international culinary teams from Germany, Australia, France, the Middle East, the Philippines, Thailand, India, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland are bringing their wealth of expertise to present customers versatile and authentic gourmet experience that may satisfy the most discerning palate.

“Imagination knows no bounds at the hotel as we are committed to transforming regular events into phenomenal occasions,” the general manager said. “Every detail and element of an event is carried out with creative flair, personalized service and meticulous attention, aiming to leave participants a uniquely Shangri-La memory.”

“Dedicated event teams supported by creative culinary solutions, super flexibility for clients as well as passionate service delivered to our guests are the core values of Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai,” Clarke said.
