Surf’s up along Taiwan’s scenic, bountiful coastline

IT is high time to enjoy a tropical holiday. Taiwan is just one and a half-hour flight from Shanghai. The island’s east coast is magnificent but delicate while the south coast is full of magic and natural resources. Azure skies, white sand, bright sunshine and exciting water entertainment can bring an unforgettable holiday in Taiwan.

Surfing

Surfing fans will never miss the chance to challenge themselves on Taiwan’s east coast. Surfing can be done all year round here. The waves are biggest between Donghe and Changbin townships in Taitung, where the continental shelf extends 50 to 60 meters out to sea, and in autumn and winter when the northeast monsoon blows.

The average summer temperature is 17 to 29 degrees Celsius, while it is 16 to 20 degrees in winter. But summer temperatures can reach more than 35 degrees, so it’s important to take precautions against the sun and to stay hydrated. Typhoons are frequent from August to October and surfers should pay attention to weather reports.

The coastal scenery along Highway No. 11 is beautiful, making the coast a vacation paradise. With the green water and blue skies, beautiful wide coastline and clean water, it is a fine stage on which surfers can show their stuff and, in fact, is widely considered a surfing paradise.

The coast at Baxian Cave, Wushibi, Yiwan, Chenggong Township, Duli, Donghe River mouth, Jinzun Bay, Xingchang and Jiqi on the Hualien coast are recommended. Among them, the coast at Wushibi and Donghe is sandy and relatively safe for surfing. The surf can be quite good and suitable for beginners, when the northeast monsoon blows and in summer. There are surf shops that hire out boards and give surfing lessons. Here, ordinary members of the public can experience the thrill of surfing first-hand. Jinzun Bay has been selected as the Asian International Surfing Competition venue by the Asian Surfing Championships.

The coast at Baxian Cave and Chenggong is rocky with fixed-point waves that are perfect in shape. The waves here move quite fast so this is a surfing spot for thrill-seekers. When entering the water, care should be taken to avoid being cut on the rocks. Beginners are advised to ask for advice from experienced surfers before entering the water.

Surfing fans can enjoy not only the excitement of surfing but also the best view at Wai’ao Beach, on the northern side of Wushih Harbor in Toucheng Township, Yilan County. As a flat sandy beach, it is also suitable for green hands. Extreme water sports like paragliding are popular among the young.

Diving

A paradise of diving and swimming, Kenting on the south coast of Taiwan boasts clear water, lush green mountains, and lots of marine life, along with water sports. The Wanlitong area has a 1-kilometer coastline that is a wide intertidal zone. Aquatic life here that attracts many scuba divers and snorkelers includes large hawksbill sea turtles, blue-spotted sting-rays, huge lobsters and lots of interesting fish. Ten meters below the sea surface is an area covered with different kinds of reefs including soft corals, stony corals and colorful coral fish. The amazing underwater world provides a seemingly unlimited area for exploration, which should satisfy divers’ desire to discover.
