Shanghai’s fashionable Danes share style secrets

CASPER Freddie is commercial consul and a team leader at the Danish Trade Council. Freddie is based in Shanghai, where he specializes in advising Danish companies operating in the consumer goods, retail and design markets. He also has extensive experience helping global brands improve their market-entry, brand-management and export strategies.

My personal style is contemporary and casual. I appreciate good quality clothing and am willing to pay a bit more to have lasting quality. I do not change my wardrobe that often, but frequently add new items.

I do invest in personal accessories and gadgets, and I strongly value design and quality in these items.

I follow fashion trends by working with the commercial aspects of design and fashion. I try to follow new designers and what’s “moving.” I frequently read design and fashion magazines and stay up-to-date by meeting with people in the fashion industry. I don’t claim to be a fashion expert, but I have good fundamental insights.

My favorite fashion brand is the Danish design brand Norse Projects. On the international scene I am fond of brands like Prada.

The designer I most admire is Danish menswear designer Mads Nørgård. Internationally, I admire a designer like Neill Barret.

The style icon I look up to is my grandfather who was the most well-dressed man I ever met and a great inspiration. He was twice voted the “Best Dressed Man” in Denmark back in the day.

The last item I added to my wardrobe was a new Swakara belt from Danish luxury company Kopenhagen Fur. So stylish, high quality and understated elegance.

The fashion item I’m eyeing next is a new sand colored suit.

My signature perfume is IDEAL by Guerlain l’Homme.

The best souvenir I’ve brought home is my Bang&OlufsenH8 headphones with noise cancellation and wireless. This is truly a Danish classic.

The most memorable place I have traveled in the past is definitely Cambodia, where I went with my family over New Year.

The last book I read was “Age of Ambition,” on China’s recent years of societal developments as seen from the perspective of author Evan Osnos. The book was really inspiring and very well written.

Gitte Søe is a Danish jewelry designer who was born in Bedsted Thy. She has lived in India, New Zealand and now Shanghai. She only uses natural and genuine materials from excellent sources for her jewelry line, and the diamonds she uses are sourced through The Kimberly Process.

I believe beauty comes from within. You can use clothing and accessories to enhance inner beauty and express yourself. It might sound like a cliché, but the biggest inspiration source for my style is “Sex & The City.” Carrie is just fabulous.

The best outfit I’ve ever worn for a special occasion was my favorite vintage dress from the 1950’s.

I follow the fashion trends by reading the fashion magazines. I also find trends on my travels around the world, by walking through the main shopping streets with all the “high fashion” brands.

I usually shop for clothes and accessories in Copenhagen at my favorite boutique: Elviro by Cordelia. They carry brands such as Pierre Balmain and Sonia Rykel. I like the smaller boutiques, where there is a story. To see a good and inspiring range of high fashion in Shanghai, I go to Lane Crawford.

My favorite fashion brand is Dior for my more feminine side and Pierre Balmain for my strong side.

The designer I most admire is Pierre Alexandre Claudius Balmain, a French fashion designer and the founder of leading post-war fashion house Balmain. Known for sophistication and elegance, he described the art of dressmaking as “the architecture of movement.”

The style icon I look up to is Scarlett Johansson, because she is so natural and beautiful. She’s an independent woman who expresses how she’s living her dream and how dedicated she is to her work. She is an inspiration.

The last item I added to my wardrobe was the BALMAIN X H&M matching pants and blouse in black patterned velvet georgette, made from blended silk with rough gold zippers.

The fashion item I am eying next is a beautiful and classic watch — I’m still looking for the right one.

I collect clothing and jewelry. I am both a clothing and a jewelry designer, which of course is reflected in my wardrobe.

My signature perfume is PacoRabanne — Black XS fits my personality. It’s elegant and subtle, with a light yet strong scent.

The best souvenirs I’ve brought home are Danish Christmas decorations. They create a cozy and loving Christmas atmosphere at our home each Christmas.

The most memorable place I have traveled to in the past was Fiji, a secluded Island in which we just relaxed by the beach, read books and did snorkeling and diving.

The best thing about living in Shanghai is the freedom. People are very independent and have respect for one another.
