Sandwiches Star at Michael Wendling’s Deli

SEVEUR, a laid-back deli, is the latest offering from Chef Michael Wendling. Located in luxury shopping mall Plaza 66 on Nanjing Road W., Seveur’s 20-seat interior echoes the copper details and wood of his first restaurant, Cuivre, with a relaxed vibe.

On the menu are a variety of sandwiches, salads and pastries. A recent weekday lunchtime visit found only a few tables occupied; delivery to nearby office buildings is apparently the preferred option.

SEveur’s lunch combo (58 yuan/US$7.42) features half a sandwich, a small green salad plus one soft drink (Shanghai Daily recommends the delicious house-made lemonade), an excellent value for the office crowd.

The most popular sandwiches, according to the chef, are the El Cubano (68 yuan), a Cuban sandwich layered with porchetta, honey roast pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and yellow mustard pressed on Cuban bread; the Beef Craving (78 yuan): roast marinated beef, brie, roasted mushroom, spicy aioli and gouda cheese and the classic Croque Monsieur (68 yuan); Slow Cooked Ham and Emmental Cheese on sourdough.

In addition to sandwiches, Seveur offers a range of Asian dishes, including a delicious Thai-style chicken satay with egg noodles, thinly sliced veggies, marred only by an overly sweet satay sauce (58 yuan). Wendling, after all, knows his southeast Asian cuisine, his “T for Thai” restaurant is proof. The home-made Vietnamese spring roll with poached shrimp was a nice option, but turned out to be a bit bland.

Desserts hark back to Wendling’s French roots, and while there isn’t a great variety, they are nicely done — the peach tart (28 yuan) was perfection, with just the right amount of sweetness. Seveur is also offering an afternoon tea set (598 yuan) that includes a bottle of Monthuys champagne and a nice selection of sweets and savoury snacks for a table to share.
