Local service awards back and bigger than ever

THE fourth iDEALShanghai Awards ceremony, held at Grand Hyatt Shanghai on the evening of September 23, produced a total of 69 winners in 26 categories based on 100,132 votes cast by Shanghai Daily readers and users of the newspaper’s official WeChat account during the month of August.

The winners’ list features favorite hotels ranging from luxury hotels, business hotels, design hotels, MICE hotels and resorts, serviced villas and apartments, gourmet landmarks as well as the year’s best real estate agencies.

This year’s awards also expanded the hotel categories to include hotels from more cities outside Shanghai; including Hangzhou, Sanya, Suzhou, Wuhan, Chengdu, Xiamen, Ningbo, Changzhou, Xi’an and Nanjing.

Chen Jingxi, deputy director of Shanghai Municipal Information Office, commented that the iDEALShanghai Awards have grown bigger and better in the past four years with more and more people attending the event.

“This shows the awards are providing service and support to global investors in Shanghai, and at the same time doing a better job at introducing Shanghai and China... with foreigners. I hope this brand will do even better as Shanghai Daily transitions and develops toward the Internet convergence model,” Chen said.

Shanghai Daily launched the iDEALShanghai Awards in 2012 with the goal of honoring businesses and venues that have close relationships with the city and its people. Winners are determined by voting results from local residents and readers of the newspaper.

Wang Wei, vice president of Shanghai United Media Group, praised Shanghai Daily’s commitment and effort in connecting foreign financial institutions, consulate generals and especially the local expat community with the city of Shanghai.

“Through Shanghai Daily’s platform, they can learn more about the city. Most importantly, iDEALShanghai Awards are a very good opportunity to draw readers and the newspaper closer, and it’s great to see the event make progress every year,” Wang said.

Here’s what guests at this year’s event had to say about the awards and life in the city.

Rodrigo Aguirre de Cárcer, Consul General of Consulate General of The K. of Spain in Shanghai, said: “I read Shanghai Daily every day. It is very good. You are doing walks and guides in different districts, I’d like to read about those old markets in Shanghai before they disappear. I go to some markets myself on weekends — like the bird and plant markets. I like China, I want to meet Chinese people. I’d like to see what Chinese people are like. I want to see the real things, the real China.”

Amb. František Hudák, Consul General of Consulate General of the Slovak Republic, said: “Shanghai is a very busy city; very cosmopolitan, full of opportunities. We are quite busy in Shanghai and we enjoy it a lot. I read Shanghai Daily every day and we are getting a lot of information from Shanghai Daily. I like this iDEALShanghai award and that’s why I am here.”

Silvia Neureiter, Consul General of Austrian Consulate General Shanghai, said: “Shanghai is a very vibrant city... It is very good to live here. I start my morning with a cup of coffee and the online version of Shanghai Daily. Shanghai Daily and iDEALShanghai are very good platform to find out what’s going on, like for the culture life, for the restaurants, for the market. They are especially important for those who don’t speak mandarin.”

João Fins-do-Lago, Consul General of Portugal, said: “I like Shanghai very much. Shanghai is the economic engine in China. It’s a large city and it’s a city that’s very important in the bilateral economic relationship between Portugal and China. My favorite thing to do in Shanghai is walk through the streets in Shanghai, in the Puxi side because of its heritage, and in the Pudong side because of the future vision. Shanghai Daily is doing a very good job, I think. For the expat population, you touch everything from entertainment and cultural to events and news. I think it would be wonderful and appealing at the same time to Chinese residents of Shanghai.”
