Concert to combine rock, motorcycle culture

MOTOUR Life, the first rock music festival especially for motorists and fans of motorcycles, will be held at the former Expo site in Pudong early next month.

The 2-day event will combine elements of rock music, motorcycle culture, car-refitting, fashion and food.

Twelve Shanghai senior rock bands will give live performances during the festival — from 3pm to 9pm — including Running Blue, Chair Club Band, Blue Garden, Lan Ting, Mushroom, 5-Pointed Star, Baixiang, Pengpeng, and Sweet Shop.

“I can say they are the best in this city,” says Wang Hao, founder of the festival.

As a senior music producer and singer born and based in Shanghai, Wang started his music career as singing in bars and has been a motorcycle rider for 20 years. These twin pursuits inspired him to hold the event.

“I have participated and performed in almost all the music festivals held in Shanghai, including big names like JZ and Strawberry,” he tells Shanghai Daily. “As a local pop musician, I was asked more than once, ‘Why is there no good or real rock music in Shanghai?’ This really made me feel sad. We do have good rock bands, and the performers in the upcoming Motour Life will prove it.”

During his 20-year music career, Wang released albums, founded bands and held individual concerts. He also runs the well-known live house Bar 288 on Taikang Road. He has also performed in theater dramas and is planning his own talk show in the city early next year.

This multi-talented man is a big fan of motorcycle and car modifications. He has taken motorcycle trips to Tibet and Xinjiang — with some dangerous situations having almost cost him his life.

Wang and his group have been working to prepare this event for nearly five years. The biggest obstacles are funding and a lack of experience.

He started by planning commercial music events for top-brand motorcycles. Now he is finally realizing his dream to hold a rock-and-riding carnival for the public.

Wang expects the event to attract thousands of local motorcycle enthusiasts, including some from Harley clubs, who will join the festival and show off their vehicles.

There will also be sports activities at the festival, including Brazilian judo, Phillipine arnis and boxing.

“We (motor lovers) are not dangerous people,” Wang says. “The spirit of a real rider is freedom, being brave, open-minded and protecting his family and lovers. We are not those rich people who try to show off by spending on expensive motorcycles or cars.

“A man can give up his life for dignity, and he can put down his dignity for his dream,” Wang concludes.
