From September 11 to 13, Photo Shanghai — the city’s most international art fair and the leading platform for photography in the Asia-Pacific region — will bring together some of the most exciting names from the world of fine art photography.

Featuring 50 leading international galleries and more than 500 works of art for sale by artists including Nobuyoshi Araki, Birdhead, Boomoon and Guy Bourdin, the event run by the World Photography Organization, returns to the Shanghai Exhibition Center.

In addition to offering exceptional prospects for international collectors to explore works by emerging and established artists from across the Asia-Pacific region, Photo Shanghai 2015 will also offer local collectors the chance to see works by internationally renowned artists from the West.

Photo Shanghai is also committed to curating museum-scale and quality exhibitions, as well as exploring the relationship between photography and other media, say organizers.

A Taryn Simon exhibition hosted by Gagosian Gallery is being presented in Asia for the first time at the event. Simon’s seminal “Birds of the West Indies” series showcases the artist’s unique weaving together of photography, text and graphic design which has made her one of the finest contemporary photographers working today.

And a Chinese debut of new work “Fly Me to the Moon” by aerial performance artist Li Wei will be presented on September 11 at 1:30pm. Supported by ON Gallery, Li will fly above the Shanghai Exhibition Center to create stunning, gravity-defying photography.

Meanwhile, one of China’s foremost video artists, professor Zhang Peili will curate work from established and emerging artists using video as their main media. Presented in the fair’s dedicated video room, the installation explores how different generations of video artists portray their surroundings.

As part of the fair’s talks program, Zhang will also speak about his curation work and the relevance of the moving image within Asia’s art scene.

There will also be galleries from 15 countries and regions, presenting the best in collectible vintage and contemporary fine art photography. These include: China’s mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan, France, Germany, Singapore, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Last but not least, Photo Shanghai 2015 also offers visitors numerous public events, including the talks program’s Artist in Profile section. Every morning, the talks program offer the public a rare opportunity to meet with and listen to photographers and experts from East and West. Experts participating in the “in conversation” events include: Aki Lumi and Yuki Onodera with Lise Li (Vanguard Gallery); Chien-Chi Chang with Anna-Patricia Kahn (Clair Gallery); Arno Rafael Minkinnen with Ellen K Willas (Willas Contemporary), Yan Wang Preston with curator Zelda Cheatle; Erwin Olaf with Madga Danysz (MD Gallery), and Jacob Aue Sobol and Alessandra Sanguinetti with Sophie Wright (Magnum Photos).

Another panel with experts Shi Hantao, Steven Harris and Lise Li, is aimed at collectors and would-be buyers is offered for the first time. The fair will explore the role of photography in international museums with curators Christopher Phillips (ICP, New York) and Liu Heung Shing (ScOP, Shanghai).

Ground-breaking contemporary landscape photographer Jimmy Nelson will share with the audience recollections of his most exciting journeys through the Asia-Pacific region. Curator Davide Quadrio will explore in-depth his inspiration behind his recent show at the Aurora Museum (Shanghai), while Alexander Montague-Sparey will join Peter McGill (Founder Pace/MacGill Gallery, New York) at the West Bund Arts Center for a talk on collecting photography.

Book events include signings by Michio Yamauchi (Taka Ishii Gallery), RongRong & inri (Three Shadows +3 Gallery) Erwin Olaf (MD Gallery) and Jacob Aue Sobol (Magnum Photos).
