Week of Kunqu coming in December

CONTEMPORARY Kunqu Art Week is coming to the Shanghai Grand Theater between December 7 and 13, bringing with it a host of performances and workshops.

The festivities are set to kick off with an opening performance from local Kunqu opera students and other enthusiasts.

On December 8, famed performer Zhang Jun will stage excerpts from various classical Kunqu works.

Zhang, who was honored as a UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2011, staged his first original Kunqu Opera “Blossoms on a Spring Moonlit Night” in June. The show was a critical success for its originality and artistry.

The artist will also present two concerts on December 12 and 13, during which he will sing excerpts based on new operatic scores as well as original pieces from “Blossoms on a Spring Moonlit Night.”

Hong Kong artist and maestro Danny Yung will present an experimental show entitled “One Table and Two Chairs” on December 10.

The classic play “Horse Trader” will be performed on December 11. The play, which centers on a young woman’s search for justice after her father is framed for murder, will star Zhang, Li Hongliang and Wei Haimin.
