‘To My Children’ — life and work of Feng Zikai

AN exhibition featuring family photos and works by renowned Chinese artist Feng Zikai (1898-1975) is on display at Lu Jie City Images and Photography.
A native of Zhejiang Province, Feng learned painting and music from Master Hong Yi, an influential Buddhist monk and artist, in his early years. After graduating in 1919, Feng came to teach art and music in the schools of Shanghai and became an editor of the Kaiming Publishing House.
Feng was renowned for his brush-pen cartoons and wrote extensively on various topics, including literature, painting, music and calligraphy.
Some of his essays, poems and cartoon works were selected for elementary school textbooks for their simplicity — that people must love life and create a more civilized living environment.
In 2009, the Feng Zikai Chinese Children’s Picture Book Award was launched in honor of the late artist.
The ongoing exhibition, entitled “To My Children,” focuses mostly on Feng’s life and his seven children.
Feng once said: “My children, who resemble swallows, share the deepest destiny with me, and possess equal standing with deities, stars and art in my heart.”
Feng’s study room has been replicated inside the exhibition hall, housing most of Feng’s old furniture and books since the family museum in a residential villa on Shaanxi Road N. closed in 2014 after neighbors complained.
