‘Sever’ highlights the RAW series

THE Rising Artists’ Works (RAW) series that was commissioned by Shanghai International Arts Festival five years ago is making a comeback this month.

That includes the Rainbow Chamber Singers’ concert which will be staged at Shanghai Symphony Hall on March 11, musical theater “I Fantasie — Rencontre Between Debussy and Du Liniang” at Shanghai Concert Hall on March 18, a musical movie “Sever” at Lyceum Theater on March 24, and modern drama “On the Road” at Lyceum Theater on March 25-26.

“Sever” is one of the highlights of the program. It borrows from a historical figure Guan Yu and Diao Chan who lived in the Three Kingdoms Period (AD 220-280). Their story is portrayed on the film with live musical performance. Songs are re-imagined and rearranged with elements from the Peking Opera.

The series was first staged at the 2015 Shanghai International Arts Festival. They later performed at The Asia Society (New York) in early 2016, followed by performances in Hungary, India and the UK.

During the tour, Zhu Ma, who created “Sever” wondered how to make programs popular among artists and ordinary residents.

“It was difficult for many young artists but it was important to lure the audiences to original works based on traditional arts,” says Zhu.
