Searching for the roots of humanity

THE Accrorap Company, led by artistic director, dancer and choreographer Kader Attou, will make its Shanghai debut with their hip-hop and modern production “The Roots.”

Attou, one of France’s leading hip-hop figures, has created a unique dance blending hip-hop and contemporary styles with circus and graphic arts elements.

Since 2008, Attou has been director of The Centre Chorégraphique National de La Rochelle.

The Accrorap Company was founded in 1989 when Attou and his good friends Eric Mezino and Mourad Merzouki were active hip-hop dancers. Their first production was “Athina.”

Attou believes the key to mixing styles is to build bridges, create links and dialogue through our differences. The choreography is humorous and poetic. The stage set is a simple table and couch with a vinyl record playing.

He describes “Roots” as a human adventure, a journey enacted by 11 hip-hop dancers.
