Missing persons inspire ink-wash artist

A solo exhibition from ink-wash painter Zhang Zhengmin is underway at the Huafu Art Center through February 28.
Entitled “People Lost,” the show features a series of ghostly figure paintings inspired by missing-person bulletins posted near the artist’s home.
According to Zhang, his imagined portraits reflect those who have lost their “soul and individuality” in the modern material world.
Born in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, Zhang graduated from the ink-wash painting department at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou in the early 1980s. As a student, Zhang was inspired by modernism and post-modernism.
“The cultural and social context are two clues in deciphering the works of Zhang,” said Li Xiaoshan, an art critic. “Culture clashes and social transitions are both floating in his ink works.”
Wu Fang, the curator of “People Lost,” commented that the artist’s haunting figures “are like a thorn that pricks your hand. They gently stimulate your nerves; lightly, but not aggressively. Zhang’s works are simple and plain, but worrying at the same time.”
Unlike many of his peers, Zhang is known for keeping a low profile. He lives in Nanjing.
