Gothenburg orchestra pops into town

GOTHENBURG Symphony Orchestra will stage a concert of North European voices at Shanghai Symphony Hall this Friday.

The orchestra dubbed “Light of the North Pole” will be conducted by Kent Nagano this time. They will perform Sibelius’s “Symphony No. 2,” cooperate with Taiwan violinist Ray Chen in Sibelius’s “Violin Concerto in D minor,” and give the world premiere of Anders Hillborg’s “The Voice of Monsters.”

Founded in 1905 in Sweden, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is known for its interpretation of northern European pieces such as the works of Sibelius and Wilhelm Stenhammar.

As guest chief conductor and the orchestra’s music consultant, Nagano asked Hillborg for a commissioned piece connecting Sweden and China. Hillborg responded with a composition based on myths in the two countries.

“There are myths of monsters in both countries, such as the dragon in China and elf in northern Europe. They are both part of the traditional culture of the two countries, and it is a huge common ground for the two very different cultures,” says Nagano. “I asked Hillborg, will the monsters speak Chinese or Swedish? He told me they will speak by music.”
