Ballet offers new take on classic tale
A DANCE version of “Sleeping Beauty” is being staged at SAIC Shanghai Culture Square until August 28.
The show is another creation from choreographer Matthew Bourn, who introduces a mix of modern and Gothic elements into this timeless tale about eternal love.
“I’m a fan of fairy tales, myths and stories that most people know. That helps when making productions without words, like in dance theaters. And more importantly, I believe there is always something about fairy-tales that keeps people telling them again and again,” says Bourne.
Yet, the choreographer’s thrilling ballet production marks a definite departure from familiar fairy terrain.
“I want to surprise the audiences rather than give them the story they already know. That’s why I put my hands on the stories,” says Bourne, “All these stories were told in many different ways over time. There were ballets, films, animations, and different written versions. I am just making another version.”
Bourne says audiences in Shanghai will be treated to the same production that has already captivated audiences overseas.
“Dance is universal. There will be no language barriers since no word are used,” says Bourne. “We don’t have to change anything to suit the audiences, though the audiences do react differently.”
Having sit among audiences in previous shows, Bourne says he’s happy about how it has been received by Chinese viewers.
