Ballet gala offers wonderful variety

THE Shanghai Grand Theater will present a “night dance in Paris” gala ballet series this summer featuring stars from the Paris Opera Ballet. Artistic director Agnes Letestu, former principal ballerina of the Paris Opera Ballet, has won numerous awards for her artistic achievements since joining the company in 1983.

“I hope to present this first time performance of the 12 principal dancers in China, and to honor French style ballet, which deeply influences world culture,” Letestu says. The Paris Opera Ballet is the oldest ballet company in the world and it continues to blend classics with innovation.

A gala is different in that scenes from several ballets are performed so spectators can have a chance to enjoy a diverse selection of programs.

At the gala, the 12 dancers will present some of the greatest choreographies of the 20th century including George Balanchine’s “Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux,” Jerome Robbins’ “In the Night” and Rudolf Nureyev’s “Cinderella” as a homage to the great ballet dancer and choreographer.

Date: July 24, 7:15pm

Tickets: 80-880 yuan

Venue: Shanghai Grand Theater

Address: 300 People’s Ave
