Artists galore at group exhibition

MOST group exhibitions in Shanghai feature works from only a handful of artists. But for the show “2522II — The Only in This Multifarious World,” pieces from no less than 32 names are being shown.
Curated by Hong Hsingwen from Taiwan, this exhibition attempts to explore society through a range of cultural metaphors.
According to Hong, 2522 is code for “Buddha,” while the Roman number II signals that this is the second time the exhibition has been mounted.
“Buddhism is an important part in the spiritual world of Chinese people,” said Hong. “It is not only the religion of the Chinese people, but also influenced Chinese culture and value judgments.”
One standout of the exhibition is a canvas created by Wang Yuhong. Born in 1972 in Shanghai, Wang graduated from the sculpture department of the China Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou in 1998.
For “2522II,” Wang has offered up a still life “The New Farewell Letter to Gongfu” featuring the Diamond Sutra tucked amid a tableau of traditional ceramic vessels.
“I wanted to depict a scene without any definitions of time and space, as if such a silent moment, when seen by the viewer, would vanish or freeze permanently,” the artist explained.
Another highlight of the exhibition is a work created by Qian Yishi, a modern master of traditional ink-wash painting techniques.
