Artist finds new view on surveillance

SURVEILLANCE and monitoring are themes that artist Zhang Qing has been concerned with for several years. These themes are central to his current solo exhibition, titled “Boundary,” now on view at ShanghART Gallery H Space through July 3.
Born in 1977, Zhang is one of Shanghai’s most promising experimental artists. The ongoing exhibition features six of his latest artworks, which together represent his blurring of the line between surveillance and art.
In one video installation titled “Don’t Be Too Bizarre,” the artist shows adults teasing a baby in a cradle. As Zhang observes, “When viewed by the baby in the cradle, all these hilarious behaviors reinforce the watcher’s experience in monitoring psychology.”
Zhang was awarded the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship (USA) in 2013. His recent exhibitions include “Move on Asia,” “Video Art in Asia 2002-2012,” ZKM Media Museum Germany in 2013.
