Young inventors show off potential

On March 18, Shanghai United International School Grade 4 hosted their annual Invention Convention. At 9am, Xiehe building was filled with the innovative inventions and creative posters explaining how they worked. Half an hour later, Jane Alston declared the convention open and the fun began.

For the next three hours, our talented student inventors enthusiastically described and demonstrated their masterpieces. They really impressed their parents, teachers and other students who came to visit. Their inventions included a moveable letter box, a wake-up machine, a slide stair lift, cleaning slippers and more. The students, aged only 9 and 10, used complicated scientific vocabulary to describe how their inventions worked and showed a clear understanding of how their inventions could help others. In the unfortunate case of an invention not working quite as planned, students still showed a good understanding of how they could improve and develop their plans.

Over the last six weeks, Grade 4 students have been discovering all about simple machines, how they worked and how they could help society. They have become experts at identifying each of the simple machines within more complex devices used in daily life. In addition, they have considered how inventions could benefit the world. Their new scientific knowledge was brought together in their inventions and the responses to questions at the Invention Convention.

As one student said: “we feel like real inventors. It is really good to see what other people did.”

The Grade 4 team would like to congratulate the students for all their hard work and of course say a big thank you to everyone who visited our convention.
