The magical Friendship Bench

WHEN I was new at BISS Pudong, I didn’t speak much English and I didn’t have many friends. It was difficult for me to ask children to play. Now I speak English and sometimes it is still difficult to find friends. When I was voted onto the Junior School Student Council, I wanted to do something about that. The council and I worked together to put in place plans for the Friendship Bench.

We held a great bake sale and collected enough money to make the bench. After looking at many styles, we ordered the bench and it was placed in the playground. We wanted a sign so people would know where it was and to make it stand out. We looked on the Internet and had it specially made. We painted the words “friendship bench” on a sign and hung it above.

It was a revolutionary way of making friends. Many students now make friends by using the bench. If someone doesn’t have anyone to play with, they sit on the Friendship Bench and wait until someone comes and asks them to play. Peer mediators help with this.

Harvey Lewis and Joost Peeters are Junior School council members of BISS Pudong.
