The importance of celebrating traditions at school

AMONG the many incredibly important decisions parents make is the selection of the best educational provider for their child. When comparing schools, one of the key considerations is always a school’s history, experience, and traditions. In her book, “Familiar Ground: Traditions That Build School Community,” Libby Woodfin explains that “traditions allow us to pass on what we know and what we care about.” Woodfin adds that traditions play a role in “creating and sustaining a sense of community and meeting the most vital needs of that community.” At established schools with an enduring history, the ceremony and celebration of traditions provides students with the experience of connectivity that comes with coming together as a group to observe and honor important milestones.

At one school in Shanghai, Yew Chung International School (YCIS), students and parents benefit from the school’s many decades of experience. Now nearing its 85th year, YCIS was founded in Hong Kong in 1932 by Madam Tsang Chor-hang with a vision and belief in the importance of education. Madam Tsang Chor-hang’s daughter and the Director of YCIS, Betty Chan, ushered the organization into a new era in 1993, when YCIS opened the first independent international school in Shanghai.

With an understanding of the importance of traditions, YCIS celebrates their Founder’s Day annually, with students, faculty, and staff from YCIS schools around the world coming together every year to honor their founder, celebrate their history, and aspire to their bright future. Following a live video broadcast with greetings and messages from all of the schools, the day of reflection and connection continues with fun sports games and activities.

They say that “there are two gifts we should give our children: one is roots, the other is wings.” Established schools can, and should, provide their students with this experience. At YCIS Shanghai, the Founder’s Day celebration is one of the many traditions that helps the students appreciate the value of honouring history, and provides the experience of being part of an organization with strong roots that they will carry with them in their future.
