SCIS Hongqiao hosts conference on global issues

SHANGHAI Community International School (SCIS) Hongqiao campus is proud to be hosting the 2016 EARCOS Middle School Global Issues Network (GIN) Conference on March 5-6. The mission of the Global Issues Network is to empower young people to collaborate locally, regionally and globally to create sustainable solutions to global issues. The GIN planning team of middle school students and their teachers have been busy planning this exciting event for the last few months.

This year’s theme, “EnGINeering Our Future,” will focus on how to design zero-waste cities. Our conference theme will be addressed through motivational keynote speakers, student-run peer-to-peer workshops, hands-on design workshops, swap shops, and much more. On March 6, students will participate in a full-day hands-on workshop focusing on the following topics: growing our own food, food packaging, designing energy efficient rooms, promoting long-lasting fashion and using sustainable materials every day.

From planning this conference, our hope as teachers is that students and adults will have the opportunity to network, experience, learn and share knowledge on global issues. In the end, we hope they leave the conference with ideas to take back to their own schools and communities, and be able to continue with a platform to share ideas in the future.

(Lisa Chui and Richard Forbes are SCIS Middle School teachers, and members of Global Issues Network Conference Committee of SCIS.)
