Program teaches positive online behaviors

THE ever-changing world of social media requires new comprehension and communication skills for students, teachers, and parents in order to ensure that these powerful media and technologies are used responsibly and ethically. Much of the interaction in the digital world happens at a distance, which can diminish children’s perception of cause and effect, action and consequence.

“Digital Literacy and Citizenship” is an essential element of technology education at YCIS Shanghai. These programs include educational tools for children, parents and teachers that address both positive online behavior, and that supports collaboration and community, as well as negative online behavior to avoid, such as cyber-bullying, hate speech and revealing too much personal information.

Both teachers and parents play an important role in helping to keep children safe in the online world. There are a few things parents can do at home to encourage constructive use of the Internet and social media, including:

• Having frequent conversations with your child about what they’re doing online, who they are talking to, what sites they visit, and why.

• Being conscious of what you post on social media, particularly about your children. Check your privacy settings to make sure that only the people you want to see your posts can see your posts.

• Establishing expectations about the amount of time your child spends online and what they do.

Technology can be an amazing part of a child’s life today, and parents can help support and guide their child toward safe and enriching experiences!
