Prioritizing student interests opens doors to life success

AT Concordia, we provide opportunities in and out of the classroom for students to learn more about themselves and their abilities. Because we are not an IB school, we have the flexibility to prioritize student passion, offering more authentic learning experiences outside the confines of the prescribed curriculum. In this way, we create space for the student voice.
Our seasoned high school faculty members know how to listen to that voice. They create possibilities for students to experiment and explore their interests. Students have the chance to discover skills and apply their classroom knowledge in new contexts through participation in co-curricular clubs and programs such as Explorations — a two-week-long program for Grades 9 and 10 that offers rigorous and relevant experiential learning opportunities. In fact, our Social Entrepreneurship and Big Data courses, as well as our Student Media Services organization, were all developed as a result of previous Explorations. That doesn’t happen at every school.
I don’t know too many schools that have principals and assistant principals who meet with each high school student to go over their schedule, or who will move classes to make schedules work for their students so they can be their best. We don’t ask, “How many APs do you need?” We ask, “What do you want to find out about yourself? What’s your passion?” And then we work with the student to help them reach their goals. This is something that is very particular to Concordia.
