Delving into the ethics of science

The Group 4 Project is an essential part of the IB Program. Group 4 refers to the sciences group in the IB and the project is a scientific investigation that requires problem identification and an answer (hypothesis) to be proposed through research and experimentation. This can be both based on primary research or secondary research.

The Group 4 Project is an interdisciplinary look at the different science subjects; the idea is that you work together with a team comprising science students from chemistry, physics, biology and design technology on the same problem. However, the same problem will be looked at from different scientific perspectives. I researched the physics behind the problem, whereas the other students in my group were researching from the perspective of their particular science.

My team consisted of seven students from four different scientific backgrounds. I was in charge of the physics aspect, Nele and Mari were the biology students, John, Dan and Yuri were in charge of the DT side and finally Brian portrayed a sport science perspective. As a group, we decided that our main theme was “the ethics behind science and technology” as technology and science are advancing so rapidly nowadays. We looked into aspects such as e-waste, blood-doping, nuclear physics, radiation and health issues related to this rapid development. We thought this was an exciting and interesting topic, due to the fact that being ethical is nowadays so important.

I personally thought the Group 4 Project was an educational experience as it tested my personal skills and improved my team working skills. Research was done separately within the different science subjects; however we ensured we had regular discussions to ensure an effective end result. On the day of the presentation I was nervous, as we chose a serious topic that can be interpreted in different ways. It allowed me to develop my communication skills and simply made me a more open-minded person.

Overall I think the Group 4 Project is worthwhile part of the curriculum.
