Building politeness into lessons

At NAIS Pudong, personal, social, emotional development and communication and language are two of the seven areas of learning which form our early years foundation stage curriculum. These two areas are essential elements of children’s learning which go hand-in-hand with early literacy and mathematics. Indeed, a study of curricula across 20 countries found that all focus on developing child’s interests and needs with an emphasis on dispositions and social and emotional wellbeing.

A child who knows when to say “please” and “thank you,” how to take turns with toys and activities, to make friends and to collaborate with their schoolmates, will use those skills to enhance their more academic learning, particularly in an early years setting where students learn from inquiry-based activities. Our approach is to integrate all areas of learning into a students’ day. For example, while students are learning to count or to use phonics, our teachers are always vigilant to encourage them to show self-control and stay focused on the task, to allow others an opportunity to speak or take a turn and to be able to appropriately share their ideas and knowledge.

At NAIS Pudong, our holistic approach to education encourages all students to be academically ambitious, personally ambitious and socially ambitious to enable them to gain the skills to fully participate in life both in the classroom and beyond. This focus is one of the reasons that people from different cultures seek out this kind of curriculum and it is particularly important for students in an international setting, many of whom will likely live in a number of different places during their childhood. A child who is able to politely and confidently interact with their peers and teachers, to learn independently and collaboratively, has a much greater chance of success wherever they may be.
