Key Shanghai sites that Deng visited

SHANGHAI Baosteel

In 1978, Deng visited Japan, where he toured Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal. He asked the company to “help us build a company like yours.” The result was the creation of then state-of-the-art Baoshan Iron & Steel Co, which later became Shanghai Baosteel Group, now a Fortune 500 company.

At the time, Shanghai accounted for one-fifth of China’s steel production. Construction on the Baoshan facility began on the same day as the groundbreaking Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China was concluded.

“We must be good learners and, in particular, good innovators to grasp new technology,” Deng said when he visited the new steel mill five years later and praised its inception.

His tribute came during a period when the project was under attack from some quarters as being a “rash foreign advance” and was at risk of being suspended. His support endured the company’s continuity.

Nanpu Bridge

The cable-stayed Nanpu Bridge, finished in December 1991, was the first span in Shanghai to connect both sides of the Huangpu River. At 8,346 meters, it was the fourth-largest of its kind in the world at the time and became a city landmark and popular tourism attraction.

Deng visited the bridge twice, in 1991 and 1992, and also wrote the inscription it bears.

“He really wanted to visit Pudong, but the area was still underdeveloped and conditions weren’t really suitable for a visit,” Zhu Zhihao, chief director of the bridge’s construction, told the media later. “He was very concerned about the process, investment and expected social profits of the bridge.”
