‘SMALL is Beautiful’
Architect Yu Ting and his studio Wutopia Lab have renovated three different spaces to host weekly public events.
Chabrol Café, named after the French New Wave director, will host screenings of movies that tell the story of Shanghai. Today, it will screen “Nostalgia,” a documentary that focuses on life in one of the city’s vanished alleyway neighborhoods.
On August 5, the screening will be “I Wish I Knew” by award-winning director Jia Zhangke, a movie that digs into the history of Shanghai through stories from 18 individuals connected to the city.
Another venue that Yu Ting has transformed is the two-floor M Space in the former French concession. Tomorrow, the nostalgic building will host an event that brings together architecture with gastronomy. The event will include an architectural modeling workshop by Shanghai-based architects and a live cooking performance.

Qidian Open Call Program
Qidian, meaning “starting point,” is an open call program aimed at discovering the next generation of Chinese creative talents in fields like art, architecture, design, music, new media and writing.
The 12 finalists, aged from 21 to 27, have been selected from more than 300 applicants. Their works will be exhibited alongside 12 international artists from the long-term 89plus project in September at the Zendai Zhujiajiao Art Museum.
The 89plus project, as the name suggests, is a platform for creative individuals born in or after 1989. Among the exhibited works, a variety of fields are covered to look into the future through eyes of the young generation.
Their research subjects range from the ecology of algae to gaps in time and space.
