Chilly adventures await in Ice Town

If the “snow city” Harbin in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province is too far, check out Ice Town in the former Italian pavilion at Shanghai World Expo 2010. It’s got various ice sculptures, Christmas trees covered with snow and dazzling lights.

Organizers say the temperature inside is minus 7 degrees Celsius.

“This is a wonderful trip for those who were born in the southern part of the country where ice and snow are rare in the winter,” said Jade Chen, an Ice Town employee.

“We have worked with Harbin Ice and Snow Festival organizers to make sure everything goes smoothly,” she added.

After walking through a labyrinth-like ice corridor, visitors are exposed to some ice-made chairs, tables, and sculptures. There’s also a small ice room much like an igloo.

It also boasts the biggest ice bar in southern China with space for 40 people. There’s a long winding slide made of ice and a specially made tire to glide down a gentle slope.

It’s crowded on weekends with wait times of up to three hours to get in and long down coats are available at reception before entering.
