Play spurs looking at life in new way
A never-ending day traps an actor until he looks at life in a different way in a new work, “Lucky Day,” to be staged May 16 to 18. The play combines absurdity in comedy — a new trend among young Chinese musical artists,
The story centers on an actor named Yin Fei, who is not dealing well with his partner actress, He Li, who always looks down on him.
The two agree to forever split after a final performance in a remote village. But a landslide prevents Yin and He from leaving the village the next day.
Akin to the movie “Groundhog Day,” Yin starts living the day over and over again, gradually adapting to the repeating day. No matter what he does, he always goes back to the same morning when waking up. Yin ends up committing suicide in an attempt to end the day, but is able to see the tears in He’s eyes for him.
He still wakes up on the same day in the morning, but this time he decides to cope with the day in a more optimistic way — to win He’s respect and love.
“I think most audience can see themselves or some of their friends in the story, searching for love, friendship or family bond, and complaining about boredom and toughness in life, ” says Duan Yannan, the director. “Sometimes, what they need is just to look at the same world with a different angle just like the actor does.”
American-style music is mostly used to feature the comic parts, while some Chinese elements are added to link to the story’s background elements.
