Children in for another year of theater treats

A great number of children’s theater programs will land at Shanghai Children’s Art Theater this year, devoted to expanding exposure to early art and theater education for more children.

Shanghai Children’s Art Theater just announced its new season of 45 programs, including both local and overseas productions, all of which are carefully graded according to the age of target audiences.

The theater keeps the major categories in 2016 for its new season, such as music, drama and dance, as well as other art forms like physical theater, lightwire theater and animation. And the interaction opportunities before, during and after the show aim to help children enjoy shows the moment they enter the theater.

Quite a number of lovely animals will visit Shanghai Children’s Art Theater this year. Audiences will get close access to extraordinary life-like dinosaurs as Erth Visual and Physical Inc from Australia brings their large-scale live puppet show “Dinosaur Zoo” in July. Awesome prehistoric creatures like Tyrannosaurus Rex will roar and walk around the stage, while audiences can watch wide-eyed from a safe distance or get right up close.

The young visitors can also stroll together with giraffes around the theater accompanied by musicians as Xirriquiteula Teatre from Spain will stage the street theater “Giraffes” in August.

Panda fans will be off on a journey to a panda’s home in June where bamboo forests and changing seasons shape the incredible world in the multimedia interactive theater “Panda’s Home” produced by TPO from Italy.

Another 11 little baby’s theaters will be staged this season, as similar programs were so well received last year.

That includes “Sensecapes” by Dalija Acin Thelander from Sweden, “Spot” by La Baracca Testoni Ragazzi from Italy, and “Songs from Above” by Theater Refleksion from Denmark.

Shanghai Children’s Art Theater deliberately introduced two immersive theaters tailored for children between six and 14 years old with special needs this year to expand art exposure to more children in the city.

“Down to Earth” by Bammboozle Theater from the UK will help children relax and experience nature on stage in April, while “Storm,” presented by the same team, will help children feel the storm of Shakespeare and the power of the heart.

“I hope that we can provide the same great environment and content to the children with special needs and help them enjoy what the stage programs can bring them,” says Liang Xiaoxia, general manager of Shanghai Children’s Art Theater.

Some of the best-received programs and groups in 2015 will revisit the theater in 2017 as well, including the BBC documentary concert “Frozen Planet,” classic picture book musical “The Tiger Who Came to Tea,” and new production of Les Doigts de la Main from Canada whose new circus program “Traces” wowed audiences last year.

“Good productions are always worth presenting again, not only because some children may prefer repeated appreciation, but also because there will always be new children becoming target audiences as they grow up,” says Liang.
