Weather chills, hearts grow warm
As the cold winter looms, the hearts of Songjiang residents warm toward those in need.
Kindergarten and primary school children have donated more than 2,000 pieces of winter clothing to 58 schools in poverty-stricken areas of Guangxi and Henan provinces.
The clothing drive was initiated a month ago by Jiang Liqun, a teacher at Songjiang Shiyan Primary School. The charity appeal was supported by parents of schoolchildren and also by the People’s Volunteers group.
“The winter is coming and we need to think about kids who have no warm clothes to wear,” said Jiang, a member of People’s Volunteers who traveled to impoverished areas on field trips to assess the needs.
Many of the children who donated clothes and schoolbags left their contact information on the boxes, and some even wrote letters, inviting the recipients to visit Songjiang one day.
On a related front, the Songjiang branch of the Shanghai Charity Foundation collected more than 1,900 pieces of winter clothing and 50 pairs of warm shoes for middle school students in Dingri County in Tibet Autonomous Region.
In addition, the Songjiang Bureau of Human Resources and Social Security and the Songjiang Youth League donated 12,000 yuan (US$1,900) to make 119 down coats for Tibetan students.
Meanwhile, Songjiang members of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Charity Foundation last week donated 100,000 yuan of nursing and personal-care products to the district’s 20 rest homes for the elderly.
Another charity foundation is providing free cataract surgery for elderly people in Songjiang. It is accepting donations via Tencent Charity Website, WeChat Donation, the Red Cross and the local civil affairs departments. Currently, more than 2 million yuan has been raised from individuals and companies.
The free cataract surgery will be provided to elderly farm people who have rural household hukou, or residency permits, that for the time being are not included in the city’s medical insurance system. Each surgery costs about 3,200 yuan, beyond the reach of ordinary farmers. An estimated 1,528 of them suffer from cataracts.
Last week, the 5th Shanghai Charity Partnership Festival’s Songjiang Day was held, under the auspices of the district Civil Affairs Bureau and Social Groups Administration, and four charity organizations. The day was designed to spotlight charitable activities and the volunteers who play vital roles in their success.
At the charity bazaar, handicrafts made by local folk artists were auctioned, with the money going to the district branch of the Shanghai Charity Foundation.
Songjiang Day attracted more than 500 volunteers, residents and social groups. About 31,000 yuan was raised.
