The sight and scent of winter blooms

IN the dead of winter, the blooming wintersweet adds a warming sight and a sweet aroma to the environment. Songjiang’s gardens and parks are awash with the blossoms.

Chenshan Botanic Garden features more than 50 types of wintersweet in red, pink and white. In Fangta Park, 60 wintersweet shrubs are blooming, and in Zuibai Pond Park, the peak flowering season is expected during Spring Festival, which starts from January 28. The park features about 100 ancient shrubs.

Wintersweet near the Shanghai observatory on Sheshan Hill is probably the city’s highest garden for the plant, with a history dating back 100 years.

Kuntianxiu Lake Park, the second-largest botanic garden in Songjiang, features almost 2,400 shrubs of wintersweet on the western side of Wenxiang Road.
