Locals brace for a hectic year in tram works

Work started this year to build six tram lines in Songjiang and a ground-breaking ceremony was held on the Wenhui-Meijiabang line, which is part of the T2 system.

The six new tram lines will cover most of the commercial areas, residential communities, tourist attractions and public establishments in the district. T1 and T2 will be the first two lines to go into service in two years.

The tram project is a complicated task as it involves the construction of rail tracks, re-laying underground pipes, road renovation and greenery planting.

Tram car design and interior decoration have been selected through bidding. The tram car will have the shape of a silkworm and the color of pale yellow.

New cars will arrive in November for services on the Guangfulin-SNT (Songjiang New Town) line.

This year will see the tram project going all over Songjiang in full swing and causing traffic jams. “We hope local people show some understanding. When T1 and T2 lines are built in 2017, public transport will improve enormously,” said the project manager, Li Hongliang, from China Railway 22nd Bureau Corp.

“We will have a safe, practical and rational construction plan to ensure a relatively quiet and clean environment for local residents,” Li said.

Songjiang is currently crisscrossed by Metro Line 9 linking Songjiang and downtown Xujiahui, the north-south Jinshan Railway, Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway and more than 100 bus lines.

Electric trams are environment-friendly and will be welcomed by local commuters. The six tram lines will total 90 kilometers and have 118 stations, including transfer stations for Metro Line 9 and 12 and Jinshan Railway.

Tram stations at Xilin Road N., Songjiang Stadium, Tongbo Neighborhood, University Town, Wenhui Road and Guangxing Road have pedestrian overpasses.
