Juggling activities for children

Most parents want their children to unwind during the summer holidays but that doesn’t necessarily mean idleness.

Many parents are torn between letting their children play and have some fun and enrolling them in “cram” courses to improve their academic chances in the next semester.

Zhou Jie is taking her son Chao Chao on a trip to the southern province of Hainan for a break. She said she wants to spend some quality time with him. While there, she will encourage him to read as well as play at the seashore.

For parents who have to work during the summer months, enrolling children in extracurricular courses solves the problem of monitoring their activities.

Three days after Jia Yi took her high school entrance exam, her mother enrolled her in a tutoring program and in calligraphy and art classes. Jia gets up at half past six and returns home at eight. Her grandmother says the classes put too much stress on her, but her mother insists that the courses will help her excel in high school.

High school English teacher Xue Ying says these training classes often adopt a rote method of learning that doesn’t teach children to think for themselves or hone their social skills.

Many teachers advise parents to let children plan their study time to suit their particular interests. Parents should take their children to bookstores and encourage them to choose books they want to read.
