Cancer patients find solace

To its 700-plus members, the Songjiang Anti-Cancer Association is a crucial lifeline.
The clinic seeks to help cancer sufferers deal with the disease in a positive way and gives them the opportunity to share their fears, hopes and experience with others in the same situation.
Qian Jiaming, director of the association, said society at large shouldn’t shun those diagnosed with cancer.
“What they need is equal treatment and a smile,” he said.
Cancer patients couldn’t agree more.
“The group has given me great courage,” one member said. “I don’t think I would have been able to face this disease without it.”
A woman identified only as Auntie Fu, who was diagnosed with cancer nine years ago and has been a member of the association for the past six, said she no longer spends her day crying and wallowing in self-pity. She now attends association activities every week and also takes courses in a school for senior citizens.
“I am more optimistic about life,” Fu said. “The encouragement of others in the association has really changed my outlook.”
Several women suffering from breast cancer formed a catwalk team. Modeling clothes, they said, helps them keep their self-esteem and provides a bit of fun.
A teacher surnamed Gu travels 90 minutes from downtown Shanghai to Songjiang every day to instruct cancer patients.
“I don’t treat them as patients but just as ordinary students,” Gu said. “It’s important for them to keep a good attitude on life.”
