Writing competition attracts many residents
A major shift has occurred with this year’s Shanghai Citizens Art Festival as it created a stage for reading and writing.
A writing competition with four categories — In Shanghai, Dreams in Books, The Image of My Mother and My Dream — was organized by Putuo District as part of the festival.
Throughout the year, Putuo Library designs various events and article submissions for different age groups.
Unlike traditional writing competitions that mostly take hard copies, this year’s competition was also open to online articles.
The In Shanghai category was especially popular among seniors, who wrote about the city’s culture, friendship, changes of home, dreams and letters to future residents.
Dreams in Books was for children who have read the 10 books selected by the committee.
Participants were then asked to write their thoughts about each of the books.
Since the competition’s launch in March, the committee has selected 3,500 stories from more than 20,000 children from all districts in Shanghai.
Of those, 300 made the next round and were judged by a panel of nine experts including renowned children’s author Zhang Qiusheng.
The Image of My Mother called on students to write a short story about their mother. Whether it was a smile or a bowl of hot soup in the winter, children shared their most sincere memories.
My Dream asked participants to write a letter to be read by themselves in 20 years.
The idea was to help participants establish goals for the future so they would start working toward them.
