Shopping, tourism fests keep it all busy
OCTOBER is probably one of the busiest months in Putuo. All shopping malls are crowded with people wishing to catch good deals, and the tourist spots are full of visitors brimming with things to see.
Thousands of visitors, both locals and expats, have thronged parades, exhibitions and shopping events during celebrations of the Shanghai Shopping Festival and Shanghai Tourism Festival, running through the National Day holiday.
They are all about living in the moment and enjoying the urban lifestyle.
Crowded tourist spots
Suzhou Creek has always been the most important part of tourism in Putuo. Along the banks there are many famous sights, including the Yuan Dynasty Water Gate Museum, the Shanghai Brand and Matchbox Label Museum, Mengqing Park, Shanghai Textile Museum, as well as the art hub M50 or 50 Moganshan Road.
Changfeng Ocean World is a popular destination where visitors can see three white beluga whales from Russia. The aquarium is also one of the best and frequently features special exhibitions. It’s especially popular among children and teenagers.
Shopping spree
Malls across the district host various events to woo shoppers and generated a revenue of around 581 million yuan (US$94.78 million) during the festivals September 24-October 7, a 13.21 percent increase over last year.
Among them is the Global Harbor. Shaped roughly like an ocean liner, it has been emerging as a new commercial landmark in Shanghai and become a must-see destination.
During the festivals, the shopping center hosts various events, including music, dance and jazz performances, as well as 3D exhibitions and lucky draws, attracting 1.61 million shoppers from September 24 to October 7.
Zhonghuan business district, another shopping hub in Putuo, also organized a series of themed events that not only emphasize selling more, but also engage in culture, such as holding exhibitions featuring Li Yuanfei’s works in the Friendship Department Store.
The store also hosted a tour exhibition of Plants vs Zombies 2 that enabled customers to experience the classic scenes from the game.
Red Star Macalline, a major furniture franchise mall, gave various coupons to the customers as well as a draw for iPhone 6 for shoppers who spend over 2,000 yuan.
Its sales revenue during October 1-3 jumped 80 percent from the same period of 2013.
Home appliance sale boom
The holiday is also a peak season for the household appliances market.
Major appliance shopping centers, such as Yolo, Gome and Suning, started the promotion a week before the break and saw significant results.
The three stores of Yolo in Putuo reported a 95.51 percent increase, especially the newly renovated Caoyang flagship store that recorded a 252.87 percent jump.
Suning’s outlet in Zhenbei area also saw a 22.22 percent increase since last year.
Gome as another giant in the household appliance market also attracted throngs of customers when its Caoyang store opened on September 30.
