Reporter donates stem cells to patient

Li Hua, a reporter and editor of Xin Putuo News, a Chinese language newspaper in Putuo District, became the 304th stem cell donor in Shanghai.

Li registered with the Shanghai database of China Marrow Donor Program (CMDP) in September 2006. Eight years later, he became a match with a patient in Shanghai and he said yes without hesitation.

“I joined the marrow donor program when I was in college, and I’d like to offer my help to the Red Cross,” Li said. “I’m very happy that it’s a match this time, and I hope the patient can recover soon.”

Li said he’d like to see more people donate stem cells to help others.

His stem cells were transported to the hospital where the patient was and immediately transplanted to the patient. Li had the same procedure the next day.

The Shanghai database now has 130,000 volunteers registered and Putuo has had 15 successful stem cell donations. Through the Red Cross program, Putuo worked with different bureaus and offices in encouraging people to join.

More than 200 volunteers joined the CMDP Shanghai branch in the first half of this year.
